Hundreds of University of Minnesota Morris students and community members showed up for the annual Welcome Picnic, which was moved indoors to the Morris Area High School last night. Besides a free meal, a number of Morris area businesses and organizations set up booths to introduce their services, and KMRS talked with a few to get an idea of the economic impact of the fall return of students on the local economy.

Mayor Sheldon Giese is on the board of the Morris Theater Cooperative, which sees an uptick in ticket sales with the return of the students.

Giese said the Morris Theater has held over the fild BlackkKlansman for an additional week specifically for the university student community.

Local banks also see an increase in the number of accounts that get opened. Mike Mahoney is a business banker with Dacotah Bank.

Mahoney said mobile deposits and online banking are popular with the students.
