Some 250 flags were retired at a special ceremony at the American Legion in Morris last Friday. When the annual event was first held 10 years ago, some residents passing by misinterpreted the burning of the flags. But Tim Hoyer of Legion Post 29, Squad 29 told KMRS that there are protocols for retiring an American flag.
Hoyer said a small percentage of the flags they receive are given to a local seamstress to be repaired and put back into service. A drop-box sits outside the Morris Legion building to collect flags from community members that they would like to retire. Stevens Community Medical Center has been added as a new drop-off site for retired flags.
