Stevens County farmer Reed Peterson was part of a delegation of 22 Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation board members who recently returned from Washington, DC where they met with members of Congress and government agricultural officials. Peterson told KMRS that the two main issues of the delegation were finishing the 2018 farm bill on time, which everyone they met with seemed hopeful about, and trade opportunities for farmers. To that extend, the delegation met with USDA Under Secretary Ted McKinney, a key person in the current trade war.

With Brexit negotiations still ongoing, Peterson said some individual countries in Europe may be able to work deals with Minnesota, but many have non-GMO requirements that could pose a challenge.  Among Minnesota represenatives the delegation met with were U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and U.S. Representatives Collin Peterson, Tom Emmer, Betty McCollum and Jason Lewis, as well as staffers from the offices of Erik Paulsen, Rick Nolan and Tim Walz.
