Nine members of the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents Presidential Search Advisory Committee came to the Morris campus this week for a listening session on what area residents are looking for in a new University president. Current U of M President Eric Kaler recently announced that he will be stepping down from his position on July 1, 2019. Among the Regents in Morris this week were Search head Abdul Omari and former Minnesota Speaker of the House Steve Sviggum. About a dozen locals showed up to share their thoughts.
Matt Johnson, the UM Morris interim athletic director, noted that 22 percent of Morris students are involved in athletics, of which 0 percent of those will gross any positive revenue. He made a plea for seeing the value of athletics on a smaller campus.
Meanwhile, UM Morris graduate Sue Dieter, who currently has a sophomore daughter at the Morris campus, shared financial concerns.
Feedback may also be given on the Presidential Search Advisory Committee website. Committee member Laura Bloomberg told KMRS that there is no set deadline for the search. It will end when they find the right candidate.
