A Morris woman is facing 8 counts of various felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges for a an incident Wednesday at Nature’s Edge Apartments in Morris. Police responded to a report of a fire alarm going off at the apartments, though no fire was at the complex. The defendant, 48-year-old Karea Leda Shaver, allegedly activated the alarms. According to the criminal complaint, Shaver resisted speaking with officers, then threatened them with a hammer. Attempts to calm the defendant down were unsuccessful, and a scuffle ensued involving the defendant biting the officer. The complaint stated that Shaver said she had previously been in mental health facilities and did not want to go back.
Felony charges against her include assault in the second degree with a dangerous weapon; making terroristic threats; assault in the fourth degree against a peace officer with demonstrable bodily harm; and obstructing the legal process, interfering with a peace officer. The maximum penalty on the most serious of the charges could result in not more than 7 years in prison and/or a $14,000 fine.
