Winter has arrived, and that means winter safety precautions need to kick into gear. Morris Chief of Police Ross Tiegs was on the KMRS Community Connection this week to remind listeners to stay with your vehicle if you skid off the road and land in a ditch.

Tiegs said it was a good idea to check and clear the tailpipe after you’ve slid off the road, as snow or ice plugging the tailpipe can lead to carbon monoxice poisoning if the engine is running. He also advised putting a winter emergency survival kit in your vehicle, which should include a flashlight with spare batteries, a red piece of cloth, candles and matches, snacks, a shovel, blankets and some spare warm winter clothing.
