The City of Benson recently denied a request by the Chippewa Valley Ethanol Company and BioPro to co-locate an ethanol plant on the former FibroMinn property, owned by Xcel Energy. The City sent their denial to the Public Utilities Commission, according to a report in the West Central Tribune.

Benson city officials prefer to sell the site to Brightmark Energy of San Francisco, which wants to produce renewable natural gas from animal and other wastes from area dairies. The company intends to ship the gas on either of two interstate pipelines near Benson.

Both BioPro and Chippewa Valley Ethanol Company have asked Xcel Energy to reconsider the rejection of their offer to purchase the former power plant building. The city believes such a transaction would jeopardize the Brightmark project.
