Sears Hometown stores will be closing in both the Kandi Mall in Willmar and the Midway Mall in Alexandria. Liquidation sales are going on now through January 12th.

In October, Sears announced bankruptcy filings. The West Central Tribune reported that Willmar store owner Joel Garza initially thought his store would not be impacted by the bankruptcy proceedings, because Sears Hometown is – legally – a separate company from Sears Holding, the owner of Sears department stores and Kmart. It has operated at the Kandi Mall for 24 years.

Sears is the latest store to close at the Kandi Mall. Herberger’s and its Home Store both closed in August when parent company BonTon went bankrupt – which also led to the Herberger’s closing in Alexandria. Book World closed at the end of 2017, and Kmart has been empty since 2012.

Mall owner RockStep Capital of Houston, Texas said it’s been working to fill the empty spaces.
