Two local retailers are helping the Stevens County Food Shelf by donating their leftover food. Food Shelf Co-Directors Lois Krump and Pat Larson noted that Willie’s SuperValu has been donating unsold bread every week, and Pizza Ranch donates the pizza left over from the buffet at the end of the night, which can be frozen.

Larson told KMRS that there is a lot of waste in American society, and the needs of the Food Shelf keep rising.

She noted that many Americans are very picky and won’t touch a blemished fruit or vegetable. The University of Minnesota Morris also packages its untouched leftover foods for donation. The Food Shelf accepted a $2,500 donation late last week from Morris Coop Association, which came with an additional $2,500 matching donation from the Land O’Lakes Foundation.
