Count State Representative Jeff Backer among those vehemently opposed to legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, the subject of early debates at the State Capitol this legislative session. Backer volunteers as an EMT and told KMRS that legalizing marijuana will lead to more addiction.

In Colorado, he said, the tax revenue from the marijuana industry has “not come close” to the social costs the state has incurred.

Backer also noted that the Democrats, as a majority party, need to set priorities and Minnesotans don’t see the marijuana issue as a high priority, so to speak.

Backer’s interview can also be heard online at under the News tab in the Community Connection section.
