As Chair of the Agriculture, Rural Development and Housing Finance Committee in the Legislature, District 12 State Senator Torrey Westrom told KMRS that discussions were beginning about a new report on housing that was critical of Minnesota for burdensome building codes and fees that have led to a shortage of new housing units.

The Elbow Lake Republican gave the example of mandated fire sprinklers, which adds $5,000 to $20,000 per unit, making it cost prohibitive for some developers to build new structures. Westrom said his Committee is looking for ways to partner with communities to meet the housing needs of rural Minnesota.
