April is Autism Awareness Month, and KMRS’ very own radio personality Jason Hocum said on this morning’s (upcoming) Community Connection program that he was diagnosed with autism over two decades ago. Hocum said the purpose of things like Autism Awareness Month is to help define people with autism. “It’s to say they’re not weirdos, they’re not freaks, or whatever,” said Hocum. “They’re different, just different people. They were born this way. I think we need to be aware and celebrate those differences.”

While people with autism generally have increased sensory sensitivities, Hocum noted that there’s a very broad spectrum of autistic individuals – everything from very high-functioning people to those who tend to “live in their own world.”
