Douglas LuVern Wilts was born March 30, 1963, in Morris, MN, to LuVern and Mildred (Christianson) Wilts. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman. He grew up on the family farm near Herman and graduated from Herman High School in 1982. He furthered his schooling at Alexandria Technical College with a degree in Farm Management. After completing his education, he returned to his roots and farmed with his two older brothers and father.
Doug met his wife, Ellen Chell, in 1997 from an unusual turn of events. They were married September 12, 1998. To this union two daughters were born. The family made their home in rural Stevens County, MN, where Doug was living at the time of his death.
Doug dearly loved farming the land that had been in the Wilts family for years. International Harvester Tractors were something Doug proudly climbed into when his legs were good. He would often joke, “If it’s not red, leave it in the shed!” Even though he was a tiny baby, weighing less than six pounds when he was born, he made up for it in his adulthood. He became a large man and had a lot of physical strength behind him.
He was never afraid of getting dirty and willing to tinker on anything. He found duct tape to be a wonderful tool for repairing just about anything. Even as his health declined he used duct tape as a way to pull his shoes on, or a way to hold bandages on his very fragile legs.
Doug was extremely proud of his two daughters. He would smile from ear to ear talking endlessly to whoever would listen to him. Even his last hours on this earth he made sure to tell both of them he loved them.
This past year, Doug was unable to farm but he still enjoyed watching farming videos on YouTube. He was a very active member and Vice President of Pomme de Terre Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters. He enjoyed hunting of all kinds, and was an excellent fisherman as well. Anyone that was in the boat with him would always be out fished by Doug. He enjoyed collecting toy International Harvester tractors. Nothing could compare for his love of his entire family, and was always proud to have been born a Wilts. He never regretted that his girls would not carry on the Wilts name because he always said, “You can teach a girl to drive tractors, too – – sometimes even better!”
