27 teams from across the state will compete in nest Monday’s State Envirothon competition at the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River. Judy Johnston of Stevens Soil and Water Conservation District is not only the local Envirothon coordinator, but the State Envirothon coordinator as well. She explained on the KMRS Community Connection program that students are judged in different categories: aquatics and wetlands, soils, forestry, wildlife, and a current issue, which this year deals with Minnesota agriculture and the environment: the knowledge and technology to feed the world.
This year’s winners of the area Envirothon competition were all from Stearns County: Sartell, St. John’s Prep, and Albany. The top State team will go to the National competition in Raleigh, North Carolina. Morris Area High School placed 5th in this year’s Area competition. But Johnston said there was a Junior team that placed 2nd in that level of the competition.
