Deputies from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office responded Monday afternoon to a report of a suspicious pickup truck on the side of the road just northwest of Willmar. The driver of the vehicle was reported to be sleeping, and identified by a deputy as a 31-year-old male from Benson. While checking his driving status, the driver fled the truck into a nearby cornfield. It was later determined the driver’s license status was revoked. During an inventory of the truck, an object with a fuse was located and removed from the truck. The Minneapolis Bomb Squad was consulted and later came to the scene where the device was confirmed to have explosive components and was rendered safe at that time.
On Tuesday, the driver of the truck was located in Willmar by the Willmar Police Department and was arrested. Charges are pending with the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force, Willmar Police Department, Minneapolis Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
