In coordination with a Global Climate Strike to call attention to the issue of climate change, recent University of Minnesota Morris graduate Sydney Bauer and current U of M Morris student Teresa Boyd are organizing a west central Minnesota effort in Morris this week. Bauer told the KMRS Community Connection that the worldwide efforts have been inspired by a 16-year-old Swedish girl who has been striking from her school every Friday for the past year.

“Organizations focusing on climate and the environment and policy have all called people to action to say: strike from school, strike from work, be a voice and tell your communities that you need to take action on climate change,” said Bauer. “And these are all hosted by local people. So, Teresa and I decided, how cool would it be if we hosted one of these events in Morris. And so we decided to do that.”

Morris strikers will be meeting from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Green River Park. A handful of other communities in Minnesota, including Willmar, will be doing similar efforts, but Bauer said Morris is the furthest west of any of the participants. People may RSVP at StrikeWithUs.org.
