The Douglas County Board of Commissioners recently approved an $18.9 million expansion and upgrade project for Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management. The Echo Press reported that the facility has applied for three Capital Assistance Program grants from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the state of Minnesota. The Commissioners’ approval was contingent on the state providing $8 million in funding.

Plans for the upgrade include moving the current household hazardous waste/recycling center, along with the administrative building, to a new location; construction of an environmental learning center; expanding the Material Recovery Facility and installing new recovery equipment; and the construction of an organics composting site at the existing landfill site near Grant County.
