NEW ULM, Minn. – Freshman Monica Calderon recorded a brace to lead the Minnesota Morris women’s soccer team (4-6, 2-3 UMAC) past Martin Luther (5-7, 2-2 UMAC), 2-0, Tuesday afternoon.
The two teams were tied at halftime 0-0 with the Cougars leading in shots, 12-4. Calderon scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Calderon then scored her second goal of the day with 21 seconds left in regulation. The Cougars outshot the Knights, 19-6, Calderon led both teams in shots with six. Bernadette Cienik tallied four saves in the shutout victory.
Cienik, a freshman, recorded her third career shutout, Calderon tallied her first career brace, and Brooke Lorentz tallied her third assist of the season on the first goal of the day.
NEW ULM, Minn. – The Martin Luther Knights (4-9-2, 2-3-0 UMAC) scored a goal with 2:48 left in regulation to defeat the UMN Morris men’s soccer team (4-12-0, 2-3-0 UMAC), 2-1, Tuesday afternoon.
Joe Graumann put the Knights on the board first in the 30th minute with his seventh goal of the season. Carter Watkinson converted a penalty kick attempt in the 40th minute to tie things up at 1-1.
Graumann then netted his second goal of the game to put the Knights up 2-1 in the 88th minute. Martin Luther outshot the Cougars, 23-12, Lucas Harmon made six saves in net for the Cougars. Watkinson led the Cougars in shots with four.
Watkinson scored his first career goal and converted his first career penalty kick attempt. The Cougars are 2-for-2 on penalty kick attempts this season.
MORRIS, Minn. – Sophomore Adam Farag has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his performance last weekend at Crown. With his honor, Farag is the first UMN Morris Cougar to receive the award.
At Crown, Farag had 14 tackles, seven of them solo. He had four tackles for loss, to the tune of minus-24 yards, including two and a half sacks. He also deflected a pass which a teammate intercepted.
The Cougars are back home on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. against Northwestern.
