The Stevens County Board of Commissioners approved the hiring of a full time social worker at their Tuesday meeting. Human Services Director Liberty Sleiter told the Board that the department has seen an increasing caseload.

“Since we met in June until October the 14th, our child protection numbers have doubled — they’ve increased 100 percent,” said Sleiter.

The hiring will add $14,000 more to previous budget requests, but federal reimbursements for social work cases may make it a wash. Sleiter expressed concern that the high numbers will sustain for the long term and with a six month training period, she wanted to get someone hired as soon as possible.
