The Minnesota Tourism Board’s Explore Minnesota publication recently ran a piece titled “Seek Out These Stellar Minnesota Museums” focusing on a number of the state’s under-explored museums. Included in their list was the Legacy of the Lakes Museum in Alexandria, formerly known as the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum. The museum has a wide range of rare boats, a vast collection of made-in-Minnesota watercraft, and more than 40 antique classic boats dating from around 1900 to the 1960s, most of which have been restored to their original glory. Prior to 1940, dozens of small boat builders lived and worked across Minnesota, and the museum tells many of their stories, including the Alexandria Boat Works which build wood fishing boats. The museum is said to have one of the finest collections of these boats in the world.
