The University of Minnesota Morris Performing Arts Series will kick off its season with the dance group Hiplet 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Edson Auditorium of the campus Student Center. Hiplet is a fusion between classical pointe technique, Hip-Hop, and a variety of other urban dance styles. Assistant Director of Student Activities Simon (see-MOAN) Franco explained on the KMRS Community Connection why the group came about.
“There aren’t many places in terms of spaces for women of color to be primo ballerinas in traditional ballet,” said Franco. “So, they have created this mixture of cultures to create a space in the ballet scene.”
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and youth, and $7 for UMM students. The group will also demonstrate basic Hiplet steps and formations and answer questions 11 a.m. Saturday in the HFA building Room 125 for the public. No prior dance experience required.
