Fishing enthusiasts are already on area lakes. One area bait shop owner is urging caution on the early ice.
Larry Jenson, of Minnewaska Bait and Tackle, in Starbuck, has these tips in case you end up in the water:
“There are ice picks and they’re on a lanyard, fits right around your neck. That is a really good idea,” said Jenson. “I would recommend nobody going out by themselves. The second guy following you should probably have some type of a rope.”
Jenson says some fishermen wear life jackets and there are new floatation suits on the market that will keep your head above water.
He says the ice is reported to be about 3 inches thick but consistency can vary greatly. Always use caution and assume all ice is unsafe.
