An Elbow Lake institution, Mohagen’s Hardware, was suddenly closed up last week by Sheriff’s Deputies who announced the store had been foreclosed on and owners Bob and Sue Kulbeik had to vacate the building as they no longer owned the store. The Kulbeiks had owned the store for the past seven years, but the Grant County Herald reported that once they vacated the premises, the locks were changed and they even took the keys to Bob’s pickup truck, which was part of the original bank loan.

Ironically, Sue Kulbiek is director of the Elbow Lake Chamber of Commerce, which promotes Elbow Lake and its businesses. She said the “shop local” message often falls on deaf ears. She said they had gotten behind on payments some months ago when “a small box discount store came to town.”

On a Facebook post, the Kulbieks wrote that “we are so sorry that Elbow Lake is losing another business and it is our hope that you will support the remaining businesses as much as possible.” The store was founded by Lars Mohagen in 1932. The Kulbieks intend to remain in the area.
