SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UMN Morris women’s basketball team (8-7, 4-3 UMAC) dropped an 80-60 decision at UW-Superior (10-5, 6-1 UMAC) Sunday afternoon. Senior Abby Van Kempen scored 17 points and tallied 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellowjackets controlled the game from early on as they built a 17-4 lead over the Cougars midway through the first.
The Cougars battled back to bring the deficit to 19-13 after the first quarter.
UW-Superior was able to take a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and then took a 39-24 lead into halftime.
After a pair of free throws from Van Kempen brought the game within seven points with 3:18 to play in the third, the Yellowjackets used an 11-1 run to lead 58-41 after three quarters of play.
The Yellowjackets held on to the double-digit lead in the fourth quarter as they picked up an 80-60 victory over the Cougars.
Mia Wassink finished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars made a season-high 26 free throws Sunday.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7:15 p.m. at Martin Luther in New Ulm, Minnesota.
SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men’s basketball team (4-11, 1-6 UMAC) dropped an 89-63 decision at conference-leading Wisconsin-Superior (10-6, 7-0 UMAC) Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After trading baskets early on in the game, the two teams were tied at 10-all with 15:40 to go in the first half.
With the score tied at 10 points, the Yellowjackets went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-10 lead over the Cougars.
The Cougars then went on a 10-2 run to bring the game within two points at 22-20 with just over eight minutes to play in the opening half.
With the first half in the books, the Yellowjackets held a 39-33 over the Cougars.
It was all UW-Superior early on in the second half as they used a 17-0 run to build a 56-33 over the Cougars with 15:19 to play in regulation.
The Cougars were unable to respond to the early Yellowjackets surge as the UW-Superior finished the game with an 89-63 victory.
Ian Carlin led the Cougars with 12 points.
Nick Peterson secured seven rebounds to lead the Cougars.
