January was above average for temperature and about average for precipitation, reported weather researchers at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris. The mean temperature for January was 12.6°F, which is 3.9°F above average. The high temperature for the month was 38°F on January 5th. The low temperature for the month was -20°F and occurred on January 16th and 17th.

The highest temperature recorded in January at the WCROC from 1886 to 2018 was 60°F on January 25, 1981. The lowest temperature recorded historically was -40°F which occurred on January 21, 1888. Precipitation for the month totaled .62 inches, which is 0.06 inches below the average of .68 inches. Snowfall was recorded at 9.8 inches which is 1.8 inches above the average of 8.0 inches.

Nine inches of snow cover was reported at the end of January. We have recorded 21.1 inches of snow for the winter of 2019 to 2020. The average for this time is 20.7 inches. Heating degree days totaled 1659 and the average is 1722.
