The Stevens County Board of Commissioners wanted to set an example of the importance of buying local at their regular meeting this week by approving the purchase of a new squad car for the Sheriff’s Department from the local Ford dealership, even though a State bid had come in for less money. Sheriff Jason Dingman presented the bids to the Commissioners.
“The State bid was $32,409. Valu Ford’s new bid was $33,046,” said Dingman. “So, there’s a $637 difference.”
The Commissioners felt the extra amount given to a local business would more likely be recirculated within the county. Commissioner Jeanne Ennen said it’s important for local car dealers to understand, however, that even though sympathies lie towards supporting local businesses, the board has a fiduciary responsibility to watch the purse strings.
