As the Minnesota Legislature began its 2020 session this week, State Representative Jeff Backer of Browns Valley sat in on a session on demographics and the Census. He told the KMRS Legislator’s Corner program that the Census is vital to ensure that rural voices get represented.
“It’s so important to make sure you’re counted,” said Backer. “We are already slanted towards the metro based on representation to the population. What we can’t do is not have our (population) counted, so it makes it even worse.”
The Census determines how many Congressional representatives a state has, and impacts funding from government agencies. Census surveys should be sent in March. Listen to Legislator’s Corner Sunday morning for the complete interview.
