MORRIS – The UMN Morris women’s basketball team (15-9, 10-5 UMAC) extended its winning streak to five games with a 94-35 victory over Martin Luther (3-21, 3-13 UMAC) Wednesday night inside the Cougar Sports Center. All 14 Cougars that played scored at least two points.
After Lexus Eagle Chasing opened up the scoring with a layup 34 seconds into the game, Katie Aguilar hit a 3-pointer to give Martin Luther its only lead of the game. Eagle Chasing then responded with a 3-pointer of her own to put the Cougars back in front. Eagle Chasing would go on to score the Cougars’ first nine points of the game.
After the first 10 minutes of play, the Cougars held a 21-12 lead over Martin Luther.
During the second quarter, UMN Morris outscored Martin Luther, 24-6, to take a 45-18 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Cougars found their stride in the third quarter as the were 13-for-19 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the free throw line en route to a 36-point quarter.
With one quarter to play, UMN Morris held an 81-26 lead over the Knights.
With the game in hand, the Cougars outscored the Knights, 13-9, in the fourth quarter en route to the 94-35 victory.
Eagle Chasing tallied a season-best 24 points. Mia Wassink scored 19 points, Abby Van Kempen finished the game with 11 points and nine rebounds. Van Kempen is four blocks away from setting the school record for career blocks with 201 (Abby Fragodt ’14 – 200).
The Cougars tallied a season-best 27 assists.
The Cougars close out the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22, at North Central. Game time is set for 4:45 p.m. in Minneapolis.
MORRIS – The Cougar men’s basketball team (8-16, 4-11 UMAC) closed out its 2019-20 home slate with a 110-80 victory over Martin Luther (5-19, 2-14 UMAC) Wednesday night inside the Cougar Sports Center. Dillon Haider led the Cougars with a career-best 29-point outing as he bested Eric Dalbey’s school record for 3-pointers made in a season.
Nick Peterson scored the first basket of the game 12 seconds in and the Cougars never looked back.
On the next possession, Haider hit his first 3-pointer of the night to set the school record.
The Cougars used an 8-2 run to open the game over the first 1:33 of action. Despite trailing by seven midway through the first half, Martin Luther was able to get back within a point but the Cougars wouldn’t give up the lead.
Down the stretch of the first half, UMN Morris used an 8-0 run to take a 55-43 lead into the break.
The Cougars kept their distance during the second half as they held a double-digit lead.
With 7:59 to go in regulation, Haider connected on another 3-pointer to give the Cougars a 22-point lead. Tath Dak capped off the scoring on the day with a jumper with 49 seconds to go in the game to make it 110-80.
Haider went 10-20 on the night, which included going 8-15 from 3-point range. Heading into Wednesday, Haider was tied with Dalbey for the school record for 3-pointers made in a season with 72 (2007-08). Jaret Johnson recorded 17 points and six rebounds, Kenneth Riley finished the game with 13 points, James Pendleton tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Corbyn Alexander added a career-best 11 rebounds.
The Cougars were 17-33 from 3-point range on the night, which is a season-best tally. UMN Morris posted a season-best 110 points. The Cougars tied a season-best six blocked shots.
The Cougars close out the 2019-20 season on Saturday, Feb. 22, at North Central. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Minneapolis.
