February’s Morris Community Meal will have a Mardi Gras theme, with gluten free and vegan options available, and will be held 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday (Feb 24) at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. Sarah Eckel with the U of M Morris Office of Community Engagement told KMRS that the menu will include New Orleans favorite, gumbo.

“We’re serving gumbo and it is a very rich kind of stew,” Eckel explained. “It’s got chicken and sausage that’s called andouille sausage, so it just has specific seasonings that make it more flavorful and rich. It’s not like spicy or anything like that. It’s got a lot of good flavors. It’s just a really rich, dense stew.”

Other foods served Monday will include dirty rice, cheesy grits, a traditional corn dish and Mardi Gras favorite King Cake for dessert. Volunteers to help in the kitchen are welcome to come Sunday or Monday afternoon. Sponsors include Bank of the West, Federated Church, Morris Lions and Riverview Dairy.
