Section 6A Championship
Henning 57, West Central Area 45
MOORHEAD – For the second straight year the Henning Hornets are section 6A champions of boys basketball following a 57-45 victory over West Central Area from Memorial Auditorium on the Concordia-Moorhead campus.
With the Knights leading 23-18, the Hornets closed the first half on a 17-4 run led by 17 points off the bench from Brandon Trana who hit 5-6 threes in the half.
The Hornets never trailed in the second half, building their lead to as much as 18 before the Knights began to chip away, eventually getting within nine with three minutes left, but that’s as close as it would get.
The Hornets shot 56 percent as a team, including 9-19 on threes, while limiting the high-powered Knights to just 36 percent shooting.
Trana finished with a game-high 19 points, Blake Wallevand had 13 with 10 rebounds, while Parker Fraki added 11. The Hornets are now 29-1 and look to defend their state title at the boys state tournament next week.
For the Knights Gage Staples had 17 points, Jack Van Kempen had 12 with nine rebounds as their season ends with a mark of 27-3.
