State Representative Jeff Backer told the KMRS Legislator’s Corner program that he is concerned about the devastating blow to the economy caused by the coronavirus, and had a conversation this week with Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka.

“But I was really pleased from hearing is is that the majority leader saying the governor is finally starting to think of the economic impact of things,” said Backer. “Not just the economic impact for families and businesses, but we’ve got to think of the economic impact of states.”

Backer said we can’t just print money to cover the losses, and he is not a believer in raising taxes. There is a possibility, he noted, that the state’s budget surplus would turn into a $1 to $10 billion deficit within a year. Legislator’s Corner can be heard during the 10 o’clock hour on Sundays on KMRS.
