While the State Legislature will likely vote tomorrow on an insulin assistance bill, Republican State Representative Jeff Backer of Browns Valley told the KMRS Legislator’s Corner this weekend that he feels the bill is redundant. Backer said the major insulin manufacturers met last summer and worked out a plan to provide free insulin to those in emergency need. He suggested the upcoming bill has more to do with political egos.

“We have a few politicians who wrote a bill, saying ‘Hey, I helped insulin’ — and it’s already been done,” said Backer. “I don’t like those false premises. That’s what I don’t like about the bill. What it does, it already has been done.”

Backer said he would probably vote for the bill even though it “does nothing different” in his opinion. If he voted against it, he said, people will accuse him of not caring for people. However, he did not rule out voting against it.
