Pope County taxpayers have several options available for the payment of property taxes due May 15, despite the current restrictions on public access to County offices during the Governor’s latest extended Stay-at-Home Order.

While in-person visits to the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office counter are not currently available, any of these five methods of payment can be used:

(1) Pay with check by mail

As always, Pope County accepts property tax payments using a check by mail. Please include the stub provided in the return envelope with your payment to allow for proper recording of your payment.

(2) Pay with check in the secure drop box at the Courthouse’s East Entrance

Pope County has provided a secure drop box for document drop offs at the East Entrance of the Courthouse. This secure box may accept payments by check or money order from taxpayers. Please use the first half stub provided with your statement and envelope with your payment to allow for proper recording of your payment.

(3) Pay with debit card or credit card online

Pope County has also provided an online interface for debit card or credit card payments of taxes due. Access this method of payment by visiting the Pope County website at www.co.pope.mn.us and click on the property tax button on the main page. Follow the online instructions to look up your parcel(s) and enter account information from the card from which you wish to draw your payment. Note that this online payment method incurs an additional fee charged to the County for processing this payment that must be recouped as part of the cost of the transaction. To avoid or reduce this fee, another method of payment can be used.

(4) Pay by e-check online

Pope County has also provided an online interface for e-check payments of taxes due. Access this method of payment by visiting the Pope County website at www.co.pope.mn.us and click on the property tax button on the main page. Follow the online instructions to look up your parcel(s) and enter account information from the bank account from which you wish to draw your payment. While this method has a lower cost than payment by debit or credit card, note that this online payment method still incurs an additional fee charged to the County for processing this payment that must be recouped as part of the cost of the transaction. To avoid this fee, another method of payment can be used.

(5) Pay by cash by visiting the Courthouse’s East Side Lobby

For taxpayers that wish to pay property taxes due in cash, visit the East Entrance of the Courthouse, which is open to the law enforcement lobby. Contact the Pope County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office at (320) 634-7706, either before coming to the Courthouse or once arriving at the Courthouse, and a staff member will meet the taxpayer in the law enforcement lobby area to collect cash payment in- person, return to the office to log the payment, and provide a receipt of the payment to the taxpayer in the lobby. While there is a secure drop box for payments outside the entrance, payments in that drop box should be limited to checks, and cash should not be deposited in the drop box.

Taxpayers with any questions about tax payments generally, with questions about these methods of payment, or those that need assistance paying by any of these methods, can call the Pope County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office at (320) 634-7706.
