The Pope County Board of Commissioners and Pope County Auditor-Treasurer approved a plan Tuesday to abate penalties for late payment of property taxes due May 15, 2020. Under this plan, penalties for late property tax payments originally due May 15 will be abated and not be due and owing if these payments are made in full by July 15, 2020.

In the resolution adopting the plan, the Board found and the Auditor-Treasurer concurred that serious economic hardship was being experienced by many taxpayers in the County due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the restrictions placed on the operation of many enterprises. They also found in the resolution that providing this abatement of penalties to taxpayers for two months would avoid an unjust and unreasonable assessment of penalties on any County taxpayers unable to pay through no fault of their own.

Taxpayers able to timely pay property taxes due are encouraged to do so, as many of Pope County’s cities, townships, and other taxing districts depend on the County’s timely disbursement of collected taxes to meet budgetary requirements.
