While the Minnesota State Fair board mulls over whether to hold the event this summer, all of the state’s county fairs have to make those same decisions. Steve Storck is on the Stevens County Fair board and also Chair of the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs. Storck told KMRS that 4-H operations have been virtually shut down until July 1st by the 4-H Extension Office, which is why many June county fairs have started to cancel, including:
“Cass, Pine River has cancelled their fair, along with Freeborn,” said Storck. “Polk, up in Fertile, Ramsey, Aitkin, Kittson County up in Hallock, and Pennington County up in Thief River.”
Storck said he expects one more cancellation today from a northern Minnesota county. He said he has been in regular discussions with carnival operators, the Department of Agriculture and the 4-H Extension Office. He said it was too early for fairs held in July and August to make the call, but noted that both Big Stone and Grant counties have fairs in July and will need to make their decision no later than mid-June.
