By Constitutional law, the State Legislature has to adjourn May 18th. But with the governor’s expected 30-day extension of the peacetime emergency today, he would need the legislature to be back in session for any further extensions. Republican State Senator Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake told the KMRS Legislator’s Corner that he is bracing for special sessions to be called.

“So if he sees the need to continue the Peacetime Emergency after June 12th, he would have to call the legislature back as part of the statutory provisions, emergency powers, that he has,” said Westrom. “I don’t see probably that not happening. Many of us are bracing for maybe multiple special sessions or multiple times to be called back to the legislature.”

Westrom said the governor needs to work more closely with the legislature to get through the COVID-19 crisis. He said Governor Walz does not need to go it alone.
