Republican State Senator Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake told the KMRS Legislator’s Corner that he’s been getting a lot of feedback from school superintendents and families of Class of 2020 graduates who are…

“…very disgusted with the governor last Friday coming out and kaboshing most graduation plans. Many schools locally were trying to decide how they could safely advance them. The governor basically squashed it,” said Westrom. “As I said, he stepped in it on this one. This is something we should leave to local control. He’s telling them they can’t even go out on a football field, where you can easily social distance in many of our small rural schools, and he’s outlawed that as well. And that has just crushed seniors and graduates.”

Westrom said the decisions about graduation ceremonies should be left to local leaders and school boards. He urged citizens to contact the governor’s office about the issue and said there is still time for the governor to reconsider his decision.
