Another long-standing Morris business will be closing up shop soon. Helen Parson opened her Helen’s Fabric shop in 1994. The store has been managed for many years by her daughter Carol Mohrman, who told KMRS that the impending closure didn’t have anything to do with COVID-19.
“We were planning on going out of business before the coronavirus,” said Mohrman. “But it sure hasn’t helped us any!”
Mohrman said people just don’t sew like they used to and many of their longtime customers passed away.
“We just don’t make enough money to pay our bills,” she said. “Until everyone was making masks, we were about the most non-essential business ever made, you know. And then all of a sudden everyone wanted to make masks so we were — ugh — it was crazy. We were busy then.”
Mohrman shared a hard business reality: “The bills don’t quit coming just because you got no customers.”
To close out the business and get rid of inventory, Helen’s Fabric will reopen June 1st with limited hours: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mohrman said what she’ll miss most about closing up shop is the people she’s dealt with over the years.
“Well, we haven’t made any money, but we sure made a lot of friends,” she said.
Mohrman said she’d like to put in another year or two of work before retiring, and will most likely look for something in the service industry, quite possibly her former career of nursing assistant. Even though the fabric store doors across the street from the Cenex will open June 1st, she is not sure if people will be out shopping or if they will come from out of town to the shop. Independent operator Marian’s Alterations, which had been based at Helen’s Fabric, will be moving to Just Us Boutique on Atlantic Avenue in Morris.
