Julia Scovil is a University of Minnesota Morris student and organizer of a "sit-in" demonstration that will be held Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of the Stevens County Courthouse.

What’s being dubbed a “Sit to Breathe Sit-In” demonstration is being planned for Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of the Stevens County Courthouse on the corner of Colorado Avenue and East 4th Street in Morris. One of the organizers of the event, University of Minnesota Morris junior Julia Scovil, told the KMRS Community Connection that they are not trying to disrupt the streets of Morris and, as a group, they are not going past the Courthouse parking lot.

“We are trying to make this as safe a space as possible so that people can express how they are feeling about the murder of George Floyd and, of course, all of the other black Americans that have been murdered by police brutality or by excessive force,” said Scovil. “We really just want to make this a safe space for discussion about race in America and, you know, race in Morris as well.”

Scovil said the Sheriff’s Office has offered to block off part of the roads near the Courthouse to increase safety. The demonstration is meant to highlight issues brought to light after the killing of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody. It is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow.
