Organizers of this afternoon’s planned “Sit to Breathe Sit In” demonstration at the Stevens County Courthouse designed to call attention to issues of racial inequity in the wake of the murder of George Floyd have cancelled the event.
In a statement to the media, organizers said the event is being cancelled “out of respect for the Twin Cities event that occurred on Tuesday, to center efforts organized by Black organizers. We encourage our passionate community to watch George Floyd’s memorial service and continue to uplift Black voices in the future as we move towards a more equitable society.”
A funeral service for Floyd will be held this afternoon in Minneapolis. Some surrounding churches and businesses had planned to close up this afternoon in anticipation of any possible trouble. But Stevens County Sheriff Jason Dingman told KMRS yesterday that he was anticipating a fairly small crowd for the event and was not forecasting any problems.
