The filing deadline for the general election was at the end of the business day on Tuesday, and most of the county races are going to be unopposed. That includes County Commissioners in Districts 1, 3 and 4, with respectively Bob Kopitzke, Ron Staples and Donny Wohlers facing no opposition. That also includes Soil and Water Supervisors for Districts 1, 4 and 5, currently held respectively by Dave Lonergan, Dennis Feuchtenberger and Troy Goodnough. The only judicial seat on local ballots that will see a contest is for Supreme Court Associate Justice Seat 4, where Michelle MacDonald will take on incumbent Paul Thissen.
For State Senate, the District 12 race will see incumbent Republican Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake against Democrat Jill Abahsain of Sauk Centre. In the State House of Representative race for District 12A, incumbent Republican Jeff Backer of Browns Valley will take on DFLer Murray Smart of Beardsley once again. In District 12B, incumbent Republican Paul Anderson of Starbuck will take on DFLer Ben Schirmers of Sauk Centre.
Meanwhile, for U.S. House of Representatives for the 7th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Collin Peterson of Detroit Lakes will have two Democratic challengers in the primary: conservative, pro-life Democrat Stephen Emery of Montevideo, and Alycia Gruenhagen of Hutchinson. Five Republicans have filed to be on the primary ballot: Republican-endorsed Michelle Fischbach of Paynesville, Dr. Noel Collis of Albany, Dave Hughes of Karlstad, Pastor Jayeson Israel Sherman of Windom, and William Louwagie of Marshall.
Minnesota’s Primary Election Day is Tuesday, August 11.
