The economic downturn was a point of concern at Tuesday’s meeting of the Stevens County Board of Commissioners. County Coordinator Rebecca Young told the KMRS Community Connection that there’s a ripple effect that could adversely effect county revenues.
“One of the challenges is the Highway User Tax Distribution Fund. We’re concerned about the funding for local bridges from that,” said Young. “That’s based on gas tax and a variety of other revenue sources, licensing tabs, auto parts sales. That money then comes back to the county for local improvement projects. And our concern is that the downturn in the economy maybe, potentially lead to loss of revenue next year for local projects.”
Young said the commissioners want to save money on many of the little things in the county’s budget so they can save up for a bigger highway building project.
