Minnesota Farm Families of 2020 are being honored virtually this year, celebrated in an online video tribute led by University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel and available 1 p.m. Thursday, August 6. A U of M Extension Committee chooses one family per county based on their commitment to their communities and for enhancing and supporting agriculture. KMRS will be spotlighting a few of this year’s honorees this week.
The Traverse County Farm Family of 2020 is Curtis and Peggy Braun. The Braun family farm was established in 1950 when Curt’s grandparents, Louis and Catherine, moved to the area from Humphrey, Nebraska. Curt started farming in 1980 with his father, Quirin, and his uncle, Jim. The Brauns grow corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar beets on their farm.
Curt and Peg raised their three children, Dane, Riley and Katie, on the farm. All the children had active roles in the operation before they graduated from their respective colleges and set off on their own endeavors.
Curt and Peg have been members of various local boards and committees over the years, including the Wheaton Area School Board, Wheaton-Dumont Elevator Co-op Board of Directors, and the Good Shepherd Church Council. Curt is currently a member of the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, Minnesota Soybean Growers Association, and serves as a township board supervisor.
