Grammy winner Dashon Burton is one of the featured performers for this weekend's virtual Lakes Area Music Festival.

The Lakes Area Music Festival kicks off its 12th annual season with an opening weekend of everything from string quartets to grand opera. Broadcasting worldwide from Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd during the Festival’s first ever virtual series, listeners will have the first chance to see these performances via Facebook live.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Festival presents two string octets. Entitled Voices of Youth, the concert displays works by Dmitri Shostakovich and George Enescu, who both starting making their marks in composing at 18. Tchaikovsky competition prizewinner Ansel Norris will be featured.

On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., A Night at the Opera will feature tenor David Portillo, accompanied by Stefano Flavoni of the San Francisco Opera. And at 2 p.m. Sunday, the chamber will present Beethoven’s String Quartet, Op. 132. Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone Dashon Burton will begin the program with African American spirituals in a presentation entitled Song of Thanks.

The Festival’s popular youth education day-camp, Explore Music!, will provide distance learning activities August 3-7. Each day, participants will engage in a variety of creative arts activities and will also learn more about the music that will be presented within the Lakes Area Music Festival’s 2020 season.
