The West Central Area Board of Education recently approved on a 4-3 vote plans for a one-site Elementary school at the district’s current Barrett school site. Also under consideration was a three-campus option, which an Elementary school in Kensington and two Elementary schools in Elbow Lake would be retained with extensive remodeling or, in Kensington’s case, complete rebuilding. The one-campus option has a K-4 Elementary school being built and attached to the current 5-6 and Secondary School in Barrett.
The Grant County Herald reported that opponents wanted to keep a separation between the younger and older students, and also cited possible population increases with families moving out of urban areas. But proponents said the district would save $500,000 by going to a one-school option, which could be used to provide more attractive programming.
