Last Tuesday’s meeting of the Stevens County Board of Commissioners featured a public hearing over the abandonment of County Ditch 29. County Coordinator Rebecca Young told the KMRS Community Connection that ongoing drainage issues and a private system that has been set up that better serves the needs led the stakeholding landowners to file the petition to abandon the ditch.
“This is just a situation, we saw landowners come together, find a different solution to get their needs met and they petitioned to have that abandoned,” said Young. She added that there are some funds left in that system, so when all the legalities get settled at the end of the year, those monies will be refunded back to the benefit of the landowners.
The County does not take over responsibility for the ditch, Young said, it just “goes away from us as if it never were there.”
