While she told KMRS that the USMCA trade agreement is a good deal, U.S. Senator Tina Smith said the deal is only as good as its enforcement, and she currently has some issues with how the Canadians are abiding by the agreements for the dairy industry.
“We’re a little concerned about some of the steps that Canada is already taking, and we want to make sure that they follow through on the commitments that they have made, especially around Class 6 and 7 milk pricing and how they were going to eliminate those classes,” said Smith. “It’s just so important that the enforcement happens as it should, so that we have the fair access to markets that we negotiated in the USMCA.”
Smith has led efforts in the Senate to send a bipartisan letter of concern about the issue.
