The Come Grow With Us horticulture education series, hosted by the Horticulture Display Garden and the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, will present an online class on Growing Tasty Tomatoes from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. U of M Extension Educator and market gardener Ryan Pesch will share his tips on trellising, cover disease issues, varieties, how to start tomatoes, and offer an annual schedule for optimum performance.
Horticulture researcher Steve Poppe gave some harvesting advice to tomato growers in advance of tonight’s presentation.
“Make sure when you harvest the fruit they have reached useable size and color,” said Poppe. “Some tomatoes will drop when ripe, others cling to the plant and you can cut them off in clusters. And you may choose to take the fruits and varieties that drop before they are completely ripe, but most types will come off the plant easily when they are ripe or when they are close to ripe.”
A link to view the class will be made available on the WCROC website on Wednesday. The class will be live for viewing starting at 6 p.m.
