At their regular meeting on Tuesday, the Stevens County Board of Commissioners set the preliminary levy for the 2021 budget. County Coordinator Rebecca Young told the KMRS Community Connection that the preliminary levy needs to be certified by the end of September.

“We always get a little bit nervous when we set that preliminary amount,” Young admitted. “Sometimes we set it slightly higher, because we know there’s maybe policy changes coming from the State and funding sources and things like that. So, that’s kind of why we looked at looking at a 0 or a 1. To set it at a 0% levy, we’re at about a plus $55,000 additional than what we needed.”

Commissioners Bob Kopitzke and Neil Wiese wanted a 1 percent levy to provide a bit more wiggle room if needed in the fall. But a 0 percent levy passed by a 3-2 vote. Young said some training and travel expenses could be cut from the budget if things get really tight.
