Sharon Viola Ehlers was born October 3, 1946, in Breckenridge, MN, to Vernon and Viola (Totzke) Ehlers of rural Wheaton. She was baptized at St. Paul’s (Taylor) Church and confirmed at Immanuel Monson church. She grew up working and farming with her parents, playing on the farm, and swimming in the pool built by Vernon. Her schooling varied from District 52 country school, Wheaton High School and classes at North Dakota State School of Science prior to senior year in high school.
After graduation, she was briefly married and gave birth to her first son, Brian Keith Olson in 1965. Her first job was at Wheaton Community Hospital as a nurse’s assistant. She and Brian moved to the Twin Cities, where she continued to work as a nurse’s aide. She was very proud of those years as a working single mother.
She first met Rev. Erwin L. Lueker, Jr. in St Paul and reconnected in San Diego, California. They were married in 1972. Erwin became a loving adopted father to Brian, and they had two more sons, Martin (1977) and Matthew (1982). During this time, Sharon was a full-time mother and real estate investor/landlord while Erwin pastored, worked on his doctorate degree, and taught classes. As for all parents who lose a child, Brian’s sudden passing in 1978 left a lasting impact on Sharon and Erwin.
After their divorce in 1987, Sharon ran a small bookkeeping business and held other part-time jobs while caring for her children and beloved family friend and neighbor Edward Hatch. She met her long-time partner Rudy Rodriguez in 1988. She immensely enjoyed having her parents, Vern and Viola, who visited for a couple months each winter.
Sharon moved back to the Wheaton area after Martin graduated high school in 1995 to be closer to her parents and enjoy a different lifestyle. She worked odd jobs, managed real estate in California, and supported Matthew during high school and college. She also dealt with health issues during this time. She briefly moved to Minneapolis in 2017 to be near her son, Matthew, before returning to Wheaton area once again.
Sharon loved to quilt, garden, paint, visit with friends and relatives, travel, connect with old and new acquaintances through the internet, and organize her many souvenirs (large and small). Her travels included places as far as New Zealand and a recent road trip through Canada and Alaska. She despised winter and enjoyed visiting Martin and old friends in California during that time of the year.
Overall, she was a strong-willed, independent woman who played by her own rules and lived a full life. She was always a champion for her sons and yearned to help others wherever she could. She also acted as a mother figure to countless others and loved spending time with children.
She is survived by her sons: Matthew (Jenne) Lueker of Dayton, MN, Martin (Sirena) Lueker-Boden of Fremont, CA; brothers: Darus Ehlers of Wheaton, MN, and Gary (Diane) Ehlers of Wheaton, MN; and grandchildren: Xavier, Aren, Ellar, and Milo.
Sharon Lueker was preceded in death by her son: Brian Lueker; parents: Vernon and Viola Ehlers; dear friend: Edward Hatch; and her nephews: John and Doug.
Arrangements are with Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD.
